Power's 1845 cabin placed on historic register

The George A. Power Cabin, located in Cobb County, was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places last month.

"The Board of Commissioners is very excited about the new listing and pleased with the efforts to preserve the historical value of the log cabin for future generations," said Commissioner Joe L. Thompson, whose district encompasses the historical site.

The Power Cabin, built in c.1845, is located in an isolated area one-quarter mile from the Chattahoochee River within the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area and is accessible by dirt path only.

According to nomination materials, it is an excellent example of mid-19th century log architecture in Georgia. The cabin retains its one-and-a-half story, single-pen form with its historic additions, logs, chimneys, stone piers and wood flooring. In addition, there is an 1860s hand-dug well, gardening area and enormous hardwood trees throughout the property. Out of 43,000 surveyed properties, there are only about 22 eligible single-pen, log houses constructed in the first half of the 19th century, according to the Georgia Historic Structures Survey.

"Now the cabin will gain attention at a national level, and people will recognize and appreciate its historic character even more," Historic Preservation Planner Michael Fortenberry said. "This listing on the National Register also gives it a layer of protection against any possible infringing development in the future."

The Power Cabin has been continuously occupied since its construction and remains so today. The house and land remained in the Power family until 1997 when the land was conveyed to the Trust for Public Land. Most of the property was donated by the Trust to the National Park Service in October 1997. In 1999, the Trust donated the Power Cabin and remaining 2.5 acres to the Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society.
