Rumors rampant that Byrne will drop out of governor's race
By Richard Hines, CobbOnline.Com
[ Updated ] The political rumor mill is churning big time right now. Local Republicans are wondering if Bill Byrne will end his quest for governor and remain as Cobb Chairman.
"I've heard those rumors and don't know what to say," says Marilyn Gilhuly, chairman of the Cobb Republican Party. "You'll have to ask him."
Gilhuly speculated if Byrne quits, it would be because of problems with fundraising. "It's going to be a tough race because Roy Barnes already has millions to spend," she said. "That makes it hard for anybody to run against the governor."
If Byrne is having money problems, so is high-profile Republican candidate Linda Shrenko who at last report has raised just $6000. Some pundits say political donations are slow because Barnes is perceived as having a lock on re-election and would rather see the GOP spend money on the US Senate, congressional and state legislatures races in 2002.
Republicans consider Senator Max Cleland (D) beatable and are willing to pour millions of dollars into a viable opponent's campaign, for example.
Byrne's second biggest problem, insiders say, is that he is not known outside of Cobb and would have to spend a lot of money on name identification first, before even getting to the issues.
